Forum to Focus on Freedom

On Saturday, Sept. 30, just a few days after Freedom Sunday, you have a unique opportunity to join with other purpose-driven Christians to learn, dialogue and then respond to one of the greatest human rights issues of our time: modern slavery. Freedom Forum is a one-day community mobilization event featuring experts in prevention, research, rescue, community building, and restoration. Freedom Forum will be held at Aldersgate Free Methodist Church in Indianapolis.

Why would you want to devote a Saturday to attending a conference about slavery?

We like to think that if we had better laws and better enforcement, righteousness would reign. But this is incomplete. Injustice is a community problem and cannot be comprehensively addressed without community members — people like you and me. We do need government and prosecutors, but we also need churches, students, business leaders, artists, teachers and health care professionals. It’s about values, not just laws and enforcement.

As Christians, we are called to be light and salt, to be healers and justice seekers, to witness and to be disciples of Jesus. Transformed, we become transformers. We have the values of the kingdom, which brings grace, joy, peace and love into the brokenness. This is the hope for our communities. We have a responsibility, and we are not powerless.

At Freedom Forum, we will be equipped and inspired as Josef Schmidt from Freedom United shares about how we can learn and do more to address human trafficking. Kim Majeski from Stripped Love will illustrate the beauty she finds in ministry with women in the strip clubs. Megan McGuire from Ascent 121 will present about the hope for youth trafficked into domestic minor sexual exploitation. The Set Free Movement, SEED and ICCM will also be represented.

This one-day learning event is not about despair, but about hope. It’s about solutions more than it is about problems. It’s an opportunity for us to come together to learn, listen, dialogue, think deeply, lament and then turn to hope-fueled action.

Please join us Sept. 30. Go to setfreemovement.com/events to learn more and to register for a suggested donation of $10.
