The Free Methodist Church and Urban Ministry

The men and women and churches active in Free Methodist Urban Fellowship (FMUF) believe the best hope for redemption of the city lies within the church of Jesus Christ.

The FMUF network exists to support and encourage urban ministry leadership and to extend the reach and effectiveness of the Free Methodist Church, especially among the poor and disenfranchised in urban areas.

FMUF members pray over B. Elliott Renfroe, President of the FMUF.

Free Methodist urban workers began collaborating for mutual support about 30 years ago when they met together for a spring conference, calling it the Continental Urban Exchange. In 1982, Free Methodist Urban Fellowship was organized. Since that time, urban leaders in the denomination have continued to meet together to pray, celebrate and strategize efforts to reach North American cities for Christ.

CUE Conference

The featured event of FMUF has been the spring conference, Continental Urban Exchange, which brings together urban workers and supporters from the U.S. and Canada. This celebration of city ministry provides fellowship, opportunities for networking and partnering, workshops and seminars, tours of active city ministries, and evening rallies.

Summer Internships

FMUF is committed to encouraging young people to explore urban ministry. To that end, the organization subsidizes summer internships in city ministry for promising urban workers in training. Most recently, support was provided for summer interns in Free Methodist churches in Seattle and Indianapolis. In the past, FMUF has provided support for interns in cities such as Seattle, Buffalo, New York, Los Angeles, Cincinatti and Indianapolis.
